TAXES: H&R Block blunder begs questions
Miami Herald via NewsEdge Corporation :

Call it a gift to late-night television comedians.

But marketing experts say a $32 million tax mistake by H&R Block could
drive away potential customers, and that would be no laughing matter
for the nation's largest tax preparer.

"For a firm like H&R Block, credibility is of paramount importance,"
said James McAlexander, an Oregon State University marketing professor
who has looked at how professional services providers appeal to
consumers. "If the H&R Block story becomes fodder for late night
television, where they become the butt of the joke, that could affect
their credibility with prospective clients."

Shares of Kansas City-based H&R Block fell $2.18, or almost 9 percent,
to close at $23.01 Friday on the New York Stock Exchange. The company
on Thursday reported a 68 percent drop in third-quarter profits, and
executives told analysts that they were lowering their earnings
expectations for the year.

The company also said it was restating earnings for 2005 and 2004 and
the first two quarters of this year after discovering it had made a
mistake in determining its state income tax rates.

Just a suggestion, but you might want to hire a high-school kid who
does web sites to re-work yours. It looks horrible in both IE and
FireFox, has odd keywords *visible* and repeated at the upper left, and
broken images. It should only be a couple hundred bucks and would
really help with the intial first-impession. Make sure whoever you
hire does NOT use FrontPage (as your current site was made with) and
will create a site that is attractive and works properly in the major
browsers, not just IE.

Just to test my theory, I sent the site to a friend just now and he
said that he'd not even bother contacting your company due to the
unprofessional appearance of the site.

It doesn't have to be anything super fancy and I know that you're a
"beancounter", but time to spend some of those beans on a real site ;^)

--------snip-----------------------------------------------

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer sued
the financial services firm H&R Block on Wednesday, accusing it of
fraudulent business practices involving IRA accounts marketed to its
tax preparation customers.

H&R Block (down $1.01 to $20.99, Research) stock tumbled on the news,
falling by as much as 8 percent on the New York Stock Exchange.

The suit, filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, seeks $250 million
in fines in addition to refunds from the Kansas City, Mo.-based
accounting firm for steering approximately 500,000 customers into IRA
accounts that were "virtually guaranteed" to lose money.

Customers who opened an Express IRA account were often burdened by
unadvertised account fees, making it difficult to grow their savings,
said Spitzer, who is currently seeking the Democratic nomination for
governor of New York.

"(H&R Block) has been advertising itself quite consistently as being in
your corner," said Spitzer at a press conference. "I think it is fair
to say that they are not in your corner -- they've been putting their
clients in the corner instead."
